Tips when you have a family member with hearing loss

When someone begins to have hearing problems, it is a hard and often frustrating process as they lose part of their ability to communicate, which is fundamental to being human.

For older people, whose hearing loss is often the result of ageing, it can often cause them to feel isolated and withdraw from social situations, affecting their overall quality of life.

For this reason, experts give family and friends of people with hearing loss a series of tips to accompany them in this process and help them make the right decisions for their health.

- One of the basic points is to talk 'face to face'. You should face the person you are talking to and not try to converse from a different room or with your back turned. Don't forget that communication is not only verbal, so accompanying words with visual cues such as gestures, expressions or lip movements helps to understand the dialogue.

- Related to the previous point, try not to talk while eating or chewing, as this makes it difficult to understand what is being said.

- It is also important to speak at a moderate speed and to pay attention to the pronunciation of words. This does not mean speaking too slowly, which does not help understanding, but speaking naturally but in a way that is aware of the other person's difficulties.

- When talking in a group, try to take turns, without interrupting or overlapping. It is also advisable to involve the hearing impaired person if you sense that they may have lost the thread.

- For those with hearing aids, it is important to remember that it is not necessary to shout. It is perfectly fine to speak at a normal conversational volume when conversing with someone wearing hearing aids, as the devices are adapted to transmit sound correctly and it is up to the person to receive the information and understand it.

- As for the environment, the ideal is to look for places without excessive background noise. Therefore, it is recommended to turn off the television or radio and close windows overlooking busy streets to improve the flow of communication.

Early signs of hearing loss

In addition to all this, at the first signs of hearing loss, it is essential to accompany the friend or relative to a specialised hearing centre that can attend to them and provide the appropriate solution to their problem.
