Deafness: habits to prevent it effectively

One of the most frustrating things for a person is not being able to hear clearly what someone is saying. Some hearing disorders mean that you cannot hear clearly; however, deafness prevents you from hearing at all. That is why it is important to prevent it. Here are some tips on how to prevent deafness effectively.

Preventing deafness habits

Types of hearing loss

The medical and health portal Medline Plus mentions that there are two types of hearing loss. The first occurs when there is an injury to the inner ear or the auditory nerve; this condition is usually permanent. The other causes sound waves not to reach the inner ear due to a build-up of wax, fluid or perforation of the eardrum.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) explains that by 2050 there are expected to be almost 2.5 billion people with some degree of hearing loss and at least 700 million in need of rehabilitation. Currently, 1.5 billion people in the world suffer from some degree of hearing loss, of which about 430 million need rehabilitation services.

The organisation describes that other symptoms are less common, but may occur: a feeling of being off balance or dizzy (more common with Ménière's disease and acoustic neuroma), a feeling of pressure in the ear (in the fluid behind the eardrum) and noise or ringing in the ears (tinnitus).

Habits to effectively prevent deafness

The web portal Ok Salud mentions some tips given by specialists to take care of the health of the ears.

  • Reduce the time of exposure to excessively loud noise. If this is not possible for work reasons, it is essential to use protective equipment such as hard hats and insulating materials. These are necessary for people working as construction workers or factory employees, among others.
  • Respect noise levels. The World Health Organisation (WHO) sets the limit at 60% of the maximum volume.
  • Be alert to any signs that may indicate that you are hearing less.
  • See a medical specialist at the first sign of hearing loss.
  • Avoid excessive volume. Do not use music players or headphones at excessive volume.
  • Eat alkaline foods to regulate the acidic pH that can lead to deafness. Eat fruits, vegetables, legumes, whole grains and nuts.
  • Maintain good hygiene. Experts advise cleaning the outermost part of the ear with gauze, but avoid using fingers or cotton buds.
